Congrats to Europe's Solheim Cup Win

First, let me say Congrats to the ladies European Solheim Cup 2011 Team! A great win for them after a long drought, since 2003 to be exact. While the weather was brisk and windy for friday and saturday, nothing could compare to the ridiculous rains that suspended play twice during the final round of individual matches on Sunday.

I have to say that an MVP for the European Team was Melissa Reid. Born in Derby, England and making her current residence there, this was her first Solheim Cup. She turned pro in December of 2007 and began her professional career with a handicap of plus 5; which was also the lowest handicap in Europe at the time. She's won twice on the LET this year; with a victory at the Deloitte Dutch Ladies Open in June and more recently, the Open de Espana Femenino on Sept. 15th. She had one win in 2010, giving her 3 career wins. She's posted her lowest round of 65 twice and had 24 top ten finishes. To me, she shows strength, talent and determination. She plays with a tigress demeanor poised on only the shot at hand. Would it surprise anyone that one of her interests is playing football along with snowboarding?

A big surprise to most fans, was the withdrawal from Cristie Kerr due to a wrist issue. While Dottie Pepper was rather firm against the fact that Cristie should have told Captain Rosie Jones and crew just how much her wrist was hurting. Dottie states that it is part of being a leader and in her position. Now on the other hand, Cristie wasn't sure what the issue was and had taken anti-inflammatories which seemed to quiet things down, thus giving her the feeling that she could play friday and saturday when that discussion arose with Rosie Jones.
I know one thing, Cristie is a competitor and a very focused and highly detailed one at that. For her to have to bow out because her wrist was not able to withstand gripping the clubs on the practice range Sunday morning, had to be her last resort. There's no question that she would have played if this was just an occasional pain, etc. When something like a tendonitis is acute/traumatic from injury or overuse, one doesn't always know when that "breaking point" will occur. Like most professional golfers, you play with aches and pains sometimes throughout the entire season. I wish Cristie some down time and time to heal both physically and emotionally.

Now, let's dabble in the strong opinions of who I feel should have been played. First of all, when you have a duo such as Christina Kim and Michelle Wie who went 4-0 at Rich Harvest Farms in 2009, one would think you would pair them. To me, that is a no-brainer! Christina Kim played friday afternoon and then not again until Sunday individuals. Shut the front door, but that seems ridiculous to me! I completely mean no disrespect to Stacy Lewis however, when she was having a disastrous saturday morning, one surely would not put her back out in the afternoon. Why take that chance when the Cup is at stake? She struggled with both of her foursome matches (friday and saturday). Go with some of your veteran Solheim Players that have solid proven records! And yes, Stacy played well on Sunday but that doesn't make "what could have been a very different scoring for saturday" any easier to swallow had there been solid players with proven records out there!  Christina Kim is not only a great Solheim Cup player, she is a FAN FAVORITE and she can get the fans and other team members fired up like a grand cheerleader. Those attributes along with an outstanding duo record with Michelle Wie speak for themselves or at least SHOULD HAVE! Now, while I know there are many who agree with me and that was evident via Twitter feeds throughout the Solheim Cup; Christina has done nothing but display class and respect for the decisions that Captain Rosie Jones made. She is a remarkable woman and athlete and I for one hope, that 2013 find Christina & Michelle back together in foursomes as they should have been this past week!

While I'm tipping my hat to Christina for her class and respect, another player comes to mind. That player is Karen Stupples of England and also well known as Cristie Kerr's individual match opponent for Sunday. Karen displayed exemplary respect for Cristie during her interview after finding out that she will win the point for Europe under this well stated rule. Karen Stupples was back playing in the Solheim Cup, only her second after being on the 2005 roster. She had some great chips and putting during her play and was great fun to watch.

For those that questioned Rosie's Captain Pick of Ryann O'Toole, shut the front door and take a seat. Ryann showed both talent and maturity in what was her first Solheim during her Rookie year! Ryann, who has played in 9 LPGA tourneys had 2 top ten finishes, 5 rounds in the 60's and earned over $165,000 thus far this season. She tied for 5th at the Safeway Classic this year, and was a two-time winner on the Futures Tour in 2010. Her collegiate accolades include 12 Top Ten finishes and 2007 Pac-10 Conference Honorable Mention selection. This young lady is going to have a great career ahead of her.

One thing is for sure, the job of being Captain during the Solheim Cup is at the least, trying and difficult. It requires making choices that some will and some won't agree with. It means taking chances on some players and being ready for the backlash on both picks for the Team as well as some matches. The statement that I want to ring solid, is that ALL of these athletes on both Team USA an Team EUROPE deserve a huge round of applause. The captains and assistant captains I'm sure are due for a much needed rest. While my opinions are just that, I mean no offense to anyone in any way. They are merely "my opinions" on this blog. I am a true and blue golf fan and supporter of our ladies on the LPGA & LET Tours. Everyone involved in the 2011 Solheim Cup should stand proud and be thanked for another outstanding job and some great competition that we the fans were able to enjoy!

This photo of Euro Team Captain Alisson Nichols says it all. As she said early in the competition, "if we can't win here, where can we?".

Well done ladies, well done!

Remembering Sept. 11th, 2001

It was May 2003 and going to NYC was something I'd always wanted to do and yet now I found there was so much more meaning with my desire to go. And while the four of us who went reveled in the hustle and bustle of Times Square, there was another task we would plan for one of our days. From being in Times Square at any given hour, the people were plenty. The streets were always full and bustling. Coffee vendors and their little carts had the best coffee ever! Also in carts were the Nuts-4-you vendors, which I became addicted to. The four of us had a good friend who lives in NYC, whom we spent a lot of time with and who was a great tour guide in letting us know the places to visit. Yes, we went to the Today show in Rockefeller Ctr, the museums, the eateries, etc. The Statue of Liberty was off limits to visitors still.

Then, came the day we planned to visit Ground Zero.........

I still remember the chills and then the tears that filled my eyes and rolled down my cheeks as I stood in that place. That place was the now empty site except for debri, of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, that no longer stood as glistening buildings in the sun along the skyline of New York but rather a mess of rubble that was cordoned off by very tall linked fence. Along the top, were slate black plaques. I soon found out what each and every plaque stated.

At first, I took a deep breathe as we got closer. I could feel my heart beginning to feel heavy and a sadness that was steadily creeping up into my very being. Would I cry, would I let myself? I started with the dedication plaque and then the real tears began as I started looking at names that were displayed on plaques up above. Those plaques held the name of every single person who died on that awful day, Sept 11th, 2001.

The site was a steady flow of people coming to pay their respects, just as I had done. I can say that every eye I looked into, was  a tear-filled one. It was a moment that I will never forget, the physical feelings I cannot describe with due justice. The minutes turned to hours as I stood there amongst the rubble, amongst others just like me to pay respects to what use to be. We didn't wonder where each other was in our group of four, and we didn't care. We were all lost in the moment and this was a day to pay respects, to mourn for those innocent lives, a day to realize that our freedom does not come without cost, a day to feel resentment for the horrendous massacre that had taken place on this very ground. A day that brought back resentment feelings like the day I visited Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona. A day that changes how you think about terrorism, our military, our policemen and women and the firemen and women who risk their lives every single day.

Other days consisted of visiting Central Park and other well known landmarks in New York. It was 2nd nature to Thank every policeman or fireman we saw, as were hundreds of others. And while being in New York City for just over a week and enjoying staying in the new W hotel in times square was fun and action packed; I left New York with a lesson that would stay with me the rest of my life.

While it is not always on everyone's mind, we must continue to Thank the men & women of our armed services who have devoted their lives for us, our freedom, and to protect us against terrorists that changed America 9/11/01. And although it's been 10 years, I can close my eyes or look at those photos and feel that same emotion that I felt while standing there in a sadness, in complete disbelief. I have just a few photos in the video below; I hope they bring to life, just a little of what I saw that day.

Our lives become busy and hectic and we struggle to find the time to do all that we want to, but the one thing that we can do, is truly Never Forget! I know I never could.

God Bless the USA..............

3 Days, 2 Continents, 1 Cup.....Solheim Cup 2011

That's right, 19 days, 15 hours, 34 minutes and 34 seconds away from the 2011 Solheim Cup! The event is taking place at Killeen Castle in Meath, Ireland.

This is a match-play format over the course of 3 days. The prior event was in 2009 at Rich Harvest Farms outside of Chicago in Sugar Grove. The USA took the Cup for those that weren't there or didn't tune in. I was fortunate enough to be there in person and watch this victory.
This year, a spectacular time will be had at Killeen Castle in Ireland. All of the pictures I'm sure, do not do it justice as being there in person would. I did have the opportunity to win a trip to the Solheim via a contest at this year's StateFarm Classic. I just needed Brittany Lincicome to finish ahead of Cristie Kerr. Everyone thought I had the win and then Brittany unfortunately started dropping strokes once she hit hole #16. The momentum that Kerr is known to bring on Sunday, was enough to propel her above Brittany but not to win the tourney. I already had picked my dear friend MaryAnn (@Ouchieee) to accompany me if I won. She is such a golf fanatic and we had a great time at the past two StateFarm Classics together. The winner of the tournament was Yani Tseng and Cristie finished ahead of Brittany. So, I won't be there live for this years Solheim Cup, but I will be there in Spirit & Heart!

For those that haven't downloaded the 2011 Solheim Cup app, you need to! This app is awesome! There are so many ways that you'll be able to follow the action, if you can't be there in person.

You can also bookmark the tourney website which is; SolheimCup.com . Then, there is the LPGA.COM . There's no reason to not follow the ladies and your team, whether that be USA or Europe! The TV schedule for the Solheim is via the Golf Channel as follows;

SEPT. 23 2:30 AM-1:00 PM GC
SEPT. 24 2:30 AM-1:00 PM GC
SEPT. 25 5:00-11:30 AM GC

Now, your Team USA Players with 9 returning members from '09 are; Cristie Kerr, Stacey Lewis, Morgan Pressel, Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Juli Inkster and Christina Kim. Finishing off the dozen are captains picks Vicky Hurst and Ryan O'Toole. As most of you know, Juli Inkster was chosen to be the assistant captain to Rosie Jones along with Sherri Steinhauer however, she earned her way into a spot and will be the first player/captain ever to play on either team USA or team Europe. While they are also touting her as the oldest player to participate in the Solheim Cup, this has little significance considering she plays to the level of those many years younger and earned her spot on the team just as anyone else has, regardless of her age! Team USA takes the top ten qualifiers and then has the two captains picks to round round out the USA Dozen.

Team Europe is Captained by Allison Nicholas. Her assistant captains are Joanne Morley and Annika Sorentam. While deriving at the European Dozen is slightly different that Team USA, Allison had 4 captains picks after the top 8 qualifiers. Her team consists of: Melissa Reid, Laura Davies, Suzann Pettersen, Christel Boeljon, Maria Hjorth, Anna Nordqvist, Catriona Matthew, Sophie Gustafson. Her 4 wildcard picks were Azahara Munoz, Caroline Hedwall, Karen Stupples and Sandra Gal. Captain Nicholas was also the captain for the 2009 European Team, at Rich Harvest Farms.

I for one, was ecstatic to see one of my favorites Karen Stupples be chosen for Team Europe. She was also on the European Team in 2005, when played at Crooked Stick. She has had victories at the Women's British Open in '04 as well as the Welch Fry's Championship in '04 and most recently the '09 Wales Ladies Championship. She's a sweet gal and always a pleasure to watch and/or tweet with.

Another favorite Christina Kim, has been a returning member of Team USA and very well known to The Solheim Cup for getting the crowd pumped. They love Christina and she is always a pleasure to watch and a crowd favorite. I expect no less in Ireland.

Before the ladies travel to Co. Meath, Ireland for The Solheim Cup, the LPGA will have 2 tournaments; the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship from Rogers Arkansas Sept. 9011 and also the Navistar LPGA Classic in Prattville Alabama. I will have additional postings on those tourneys as they near.

The Wyndham Championship

This week on the PGA Tour currently sitting atop the leader board with a 3 stroke advantage at -12 is Tommy Two-Gloves Gainey. Tommy got that name from a habit he picked up playing baseball and wearing 2 gloves. Well, it stuck and he still wears 2 gloves but he swings a different stick. Sitting in a tie for 2nd are 5 players; Petterson, W. Simpson, S. Appleby, D. Summerhays and Ernie Els at -9.

Are the days gone, of just one or two players being in the top spots every weekend? I think that it's great to see some of the new talent of these "young guns" if you will. I like the fact that the talent is so widespread throughout the PGA Tour and European Tour, that week to week it's anyone's trophy to take!

Don't get me wrong, there are still the talent of some of the veterans such as Els, Furyk, Goosen, Toms, etc. that continue to show they still have what it takes to contend and possibly win tournaments just the same. I think the excitement that this widespread talent brings to the PGA, is just one more facet that makes it exciting for the fans to watch!

Currently, Tommy "two-gloves" Gainey is the leader. Tommy has posted rounds of 63 and 65 respectively. He has not yet tee'd off for his 3rd round today. Thursday Tommy captured 5 birdies and 1 eagle, while friday netted him 6 birdies and 1 bogey. He will be teeing off at 2:05 PM today in Greensboro, NC at the Sedgefield Country Club alongside Webb Simpson. Now I personally think Webb has a great chance to grab his 1st win. Webb turned pro in 2008. He's had two 2nd place finishes this year and 6 top tens. He came in 2nd at the Transistions Championship and was in a playoff at the Zurich Classic. I think it is only a matter of time before he puts a win under his belt!

It will be a great Championship to watch. After all, there's no S.Williams caddying to take all the media interviews. Tournaments are about the "players" and it's their talent that will get them their result. I'm not knocking caddies, as they have an important task as well however, without a talented player, the team will not have that optimal finish.

Just like on several of the golf tours, the age and talent of the up and coming talented golfers are getting younger and younger. With the high tech equipment and the dedication to the fitness level required, it is truly a chance for anyone to win from week to week. It is however, a sport that one can play for decades if they choose. I find it awesome to see a veteran of the sport, grab a win when everyone has somewhat set them aside. Like many things in life; age does not have to be a factor. Like Dara Torres says; "age is just a number"!

Best of Luck to Webb as well as the rest of the golfers. Will we have another play-off finish? It is certainly a possibility. I love to see a tournament go to a playoff. This puts the talent against the pressure and the result can leave you wondering "how did that happen"?

Now, Go Hit Some Balls.........

Will Na Yeon Choi capture her 1st LPGA win of the season?

NYC doesn't just stand for New York City; it is the initials of a very talented young lady from South Korea, Na Yeon Choi. She started playing golf at the age of 11. She gives credit to her father, for being her biggest influence. As an amateur, she was a member of the Korean National Team and won the 2004 ADT CAPS Invitational on the KPLGA. Following that victory, Na tourned Pro. Na also likes to shoot pool and watch the sport of Volleyball.

At Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon this week for the Safeway Classic, Na had a great opening round with 8 birdies and 1 double bogey for a 65! Her stats were 9/13 fairways hit, 12/18 greens in regulation, 25 putts and a driving distance averaging 245. She sits atop the leader board at -6, just two strokes ahead of Grace Park.

Na's 2011 season thus far, has netted her just over $500,000. She has had 21 of 41 rounds under par, which puts her in a tie at 13th. She's ranked 12th in her birdies, at 148. Her overall driving average is just over 255 and her sand saves rank her at 13th, with 25.000. Na has had 4 wins in her career, 2 of which came in 2009 and 2 in 2010. She's also had 4 international victories. She's had 5 top ten finishes thus far this year after 16 in 2010, 11 in 2009 and 10 in 2008. Na's career low round is a 63 and she's had 1 hole in one on the LPGA Tour. Career earnings have topped slightly over $4,800.000; with having her 2008 rookie year earning her over $1 million. She's like a race horse out of the gates. She has come out strong in her career and I believe will have many many more wins on the LPGA Tour!

She's been starring at a victory this season, with a T3rd at the Avnet LPGA Classic and a T5 at the Kia Classic, a 6th place finish at the HSBC Women's Championship, T7 at the RICOH Women's British Open to name a few. She is ready to capture her 1st win of the 2011 LPGA Season this weekend. She will be teeing off at 2:21 PM. Today could be a different story with performance on the greens, with her afternoon start time. Yesterday, the greens became somewhat burnt and were very firm for those finishing their back nine in the afternoon hours.

Adam Scott and "his" talent

If you're like most out there, you're sick and tired of hearing about Steve Williams and him taking over the press last week instead of the talented player Adam Scott, who WON!

Some things about Adam you may not know....
Adam Scott turned pro in 2000. Born in Adelaide, Austrailia on July 16,1980. Adam attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He's won 4 tournaments in the past 5 years, and placed 2nd in 3. This year, Adam has 4 Top ten finishes and 7 Top 25. In 2007, he finished with 6 Top Ten finishes and earned $3,413,185. This year, he's just shy of $3 million in earnings. Currently, he's ranked 15th in the Fed-Ex Standings with 1,232 pts.

In the Golf Bag....
Adam plays Titleist MB forged irons, KB tour stiff. He plays the Titleist 910 woods and a 910H hybrid. He also uses Vokey Design wedges. His putter is a Scotty Camerom Kombi Long Putter. As I mentioned on twitter today, he started using the long putter after his Coach had him try it. And last but not least, the Titleist Pro V1 golf ball.

His Foundation....
Adam established the "Adam Scott Foundation" whose mission statement is to provide support to disadvantaged and underprivileged youth by providing the help to overcome difficulties or to offer opportunities that they otherwise would not have. I think like most people, it is best when we see those in the position to, give to those charities that are less fortunate. And for that to be to our youth of today, is doubly great!

At this week's 93rd PGA Championship, Adam currently sits in a tie for 7th. He's moved up the ladder 4 positions today and he has 5 holes to play! He's captured 2 birdies and 1 bogey thus far today. Friday's round consisted of 4 birdies, 1 bogey and 1 double bogey. His first round on thursday, he had 5 birdies and 4 bogeys. He has consistently started to trim those bogeys off of his card. If he keeps his focus and keeps the bogeys away, Adam Scott will be in the Top 5 to finish this tournament, if not have a back to back WIN.

I think that Adam has proven that he has the talent, just as he's had long before Steve Williams. And Adam will himself admit that Steve does bring out the good in him. Whether Steve's a good guy to have on his bag is aside from how Steve looked after his interviews last week. I won't  inject too much of my personal opinion, as I don't wish to slam Williams. I just think everything was handled poorly, that's all. I believe Adam Scott deserved much more attention that an "ex-caddie" of Tiger Woods. I think that players today have the discipline and talent as well as the best of equipment, to improve their games. I think technology will continue to improve as well. After all, everything that doesn't change, gets left behind.

Akron Ohio and the Gary Player Cup

Hunter Mahan is the defending Champion of last year's Bridgestone Invitational. While he may not defend that title, he's not giving up!
Hunter posted rounds of 71, 69 and 72. He had a bit of a struggle today and carded a double-bogey, 2 bogey's and 2 birdies. He is currently in a T42.Hunter, who was married last year has a lot of game left and he will attempt to surge on Sun.

There's a New Kid in Town........ That's right, Adam Scott! Currently leading by 1 stroke over Ryo Ishikawa through 17 holes. He sits atop the leader board at -12. While having 8 birdies in round 1, he's had 6 today so far with one hole left to play. The only thing different today, is that he allowed 2 birdies on his card. Most will know Adam Scott's name from the media in the past couple of weeks. Not for winning a tourney recently, but for having the great Steve Williams on his bag now!

Yes, the same Steve Williams that Caddied for Tiger Woods for 12 yrs before being "let go" during a meeting at the AT&T National recently.

You ask who Tiger has on his bag for now; a childhood friend Byron Bell. Yes, Bryron is the man in charge of Tiger's course design company. While Tiger started out this week okay, he's just not hanging on through each consecutive round. His first round had 3 birdies and 1 bogey. His 2nd round consisted of 3 bogeys, 1 double-bogey and 3 birdies. Today, he's had 4 bogeys and carded only 2 birdies. Do you think he's been distracted by the fact that his previous caddie is on the leader's bag? I would have to say this is abit of a humbling experience. Afterall, Steve hasn't heard from Tiger since that mtg at the AT&T National when he was blindsided. Now, Steve is on Adam Scott's bag and Adam has held the lead in this week's Bridgestone Invitational.

Last week's winner Scott Stallings is likely still feeling the aftershock of last week's playoff win. He won the Greenbrier when he sank a 7 foot putt to take the trophy and leave Bob Estes and Bill Haas feeling the sting. Today's round was likely his toughest carded this week at the Bridgestone; and consisted of 3 birdies, 3 bogeys and 1 double-bogey. He is currently in a T30. This is his rookie year on the PGA Tour. Watching him putt and then flip the handle of the putter away from himself whilst watching his putt go in, was exciting! I for one, let out a huge scream (or should I say cheer)! This is the 10th time this year on the PGA Tour, that a first time winner has walked away with the trophy! A phenomenal feat I'd say, when you can capture a WIN on your Rookie Year! All this came after finishing 3rd at Transitions.

He hails from Tennesee and a graduate of Tennesee Tech in 2007. He played on the Hooters Tour before reaching the PGA Tour.
A man of Christian Faith, his favorite scripture is: "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" Phillipians 4:13.  I'd say he is proving that to be true!

Scott is a southern gentleman of a player and married to beautiful wife Jen. I had the pleasure of meeting Scott & Jen when I worked the TPC @ Deere Run a few weeks ago and got him set up with his wheels for the week. He is a polite young man and will have a great career ahead! You can learn more about Scott via his website; StallingsGolf.com and by following him via Twitter @StallingsGolf

One thing is for sure, these Rookies have made it more and more difficult for the regulars to win. There is a huge field of talented young men just starting out on Tour and they are playing with a hunger to win! I mean, 10 first timer wins already this season is amazing! So, Good Luck to all the Young Guns out there!

Now, Go Hit Some Balls.............

8 days until Pumpkin Ridge for the LPGA

For most, the ladies are having a bit of a break between the last LPGA event The Ricoh Women's British Open and the upcoming Safeway Classic presented by Coca Cola. The Safeway Classic will be played August 19th-21st in North Plains Oregon. Located just a mere 20 miles from downtown Portland, and boasting two great courses. The Safeway Classic is a 54 hole format and will be played on the Ghost Creek Course. Ghost Creek is known as one of the nation's premier semi-private courses. It is a Robert Cupp design (as is Witch Hollow) with rolling terrain. Let's not forget about the creek that will appear throughout the course! This course also hosted The Nike Tour Championships in '93 & '94. Sister course at Pumpkin Ridge is the Witch Hollow, which remains as a "members only" course.

Played at the infamous Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, the course is as picturesque as a postcard. Every hole offers a spectacular view. One of my favorites, is hole #5. While it is only a par 3, the green is so wide that it is not unheard of to have a 100 + yd putt!

I encourage you to take a tour of each hole via the tourney website or click on here; The Course, hole by hole.
The Safeway Classic has a host of charities that will again benefit from the tourney, as has been their main focus in the past. I urge you to visit the website and learn about the charities and causes that benefit from this great tournament.

Ai Miyazato is the defending Champion. Ai beat out Na Yeon Choi and Crisite Kerr by 2 strokes to finish at 11 under in 2010. Choi & Kerr finished in a tie for 2nd at 9 under, and Pettersen and Song Hee Kim in a tie for 4th at -8.

A big change to Hole #9; which has been changed back to a par 4. Unless you're a long hitter, this could prove to be a challenge. Most will not make their 2nd shot to the green for fear of putting it in the water. There is a pond on the left and the creek on the right. Previously part of a 3 hole stretch of par 5's, it went back to the par 4 which is what it is for public play. And the fact that it was originally designed to be a par 4. As many of you might realize, this can create a lag in play and a lot of wait time. Such as the case with Juli Inkster's disqualification last year. Inkster had a 30 min wait before she could tee off on hole #10. She put a weight on her club and took some swings to stay warmed up. Well, such to the dismay that was a shadow over several tourneys in 2010; a tv viewer saw this via the Golf Channel and called in to report the rule violation. Juli was dumbfounded as were many. She would have went into the final round in a tie for 2nd place without that disqualification.

Now whether it is right or wrong, I don't believe in the couch referees. I believe that the game of Golf is played with a professionalism and whether you're a guy or a gal, must rely on your knowledge of the games rules. It wasn't like Juli did so knowing it was a violation. She merely put a weight on the 'ol 9 iron to stay loose, to which I don't blame her at all. After all, a 30 minute wait....come on! There's something seriously wrong when there is that long of a wait between holes; unless, it's a John Daly flub and he cards 13 strokes for one hole. [no offense to Big John, I've always been a fan].

Another course change is the #8 hole that plays downhill. This has changed from a 507 yd hole to a 566 yd one. This will in turn make it a 3 stroke play for most to get onto the green. Another benefit to those long hitters such as Brittany Lincicome and Yani Tseng, that could make it in 2. The perfect shot would be to have your ball lie near the bunker for a clear shot to the green and then pitch close enough for a 1 putt. The course is said to be playing 6,512 yards this year with the changes instituted.

Talk about achievement, Ashlee Pickerall is receiving a sponsor exemption into this years event. Ashlee, who is a senior at West Salem High won the Amateur Open at Langdon Farms with an even par of 71. She has placed in the top 10 of the 6A High School Tournament every year, with a 2nd place in 2011. Additionally, some amateurs gaining entry into Monday's qualifier were Erynne Lee and Tiffany Schoning. Two will qualify after an 18 hole stroke play event on Monday. I will be anxious to see if these two talented young ladies are the ones.

Coverage for the Safeway Classic presented by Coca Cola will be via the Golf Channel. Times listed are ET; Aug 19th 6:30-8:30 PM, Aug 20th 6:30-9:30 PM and Aug 21st 7:00-9:30 PM. To me, why make the final round the shortest of coverage? I am a firm believer in that there needs to be more televised exposure for the LPGA and the LET. They are role models for many of our female youth of today and I simply feel that the ladies in the LPGA today deserve more AIR TIME!

I will recommend to you, a good read by fellow Twitter friend @Ray_Matthew . The read is from his posting on Friday, August 5th and you can read it by clicking on this link; Golf Jim but not as we know it .

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger!

Tiger in an accident. Tiger accused of infidelity. Tiger trying to save his marriage. Tiger getting a divorce. Tiger's new party girl girlfriend. Tiger out for injury. Tiger and Caddie Split. Tiger returns for Bridgestone. Tiger, Tiger, Tiger!

While the prior year was a big one for Tiger Woods being in the media; he's had another kind of media frenzy this year. He started playing and slowly getting back into contention and then had to miss several events due to an achilles injury and his knee not being up to par (no pun intended). He has announced he will return for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Augl 11-14th.

Then just recently, he split with longtime caddie and friend Steve Williams. We all know that they were in each other's weddings, and the friendship "was" a strong one. Steve had been with Tiger for 12 years. He stood by Tiger waiting out the past 2 years through the scandal of infidelity and injury and then without any warning to Williams, he was called into a meeting at AT&T National to get the news he was being let go. The hardest thing for Steve about this split, was as he says "the timing". I'm sure in addition to timing, will be the $1 million a year pay for the duties of caddying.

While the norm is $1,000-1500/week plus 5% cut when their player finishes out of the top 10, a 7% cut with a top ten finish and 10% of a "winner's" paycheck; there could be different contracts worked out such as what Tiger and Steve had.  The downfall from the normal payment guideline per se, is when a player misses the cut, so does the players caddy. To say there aren't some bitter feelings for Steve about his dismissal, would be saying he won't miss the money. Since that split, Williams has been caddying for Adam Scott. One thing is for sure, Steve will land on his feet. He's a great guy and a talented caddy, who is extremely loyal to say the least.

Tiger has filled the job with a longtime friend of his since his younger childhood days, Byron  Bell. Byron just happens to also be the president of Tiger's golf course design company. The perfect pair matchup for WCG-Bridgestone, would be Adam Scott/Steve Williams with Tiger Woods/Byron Bell. I for one, would be anxious to see if Tiger offers Williams any respect on or off the course at Firestone. After all, he hasn't thus far. Williams has not spoken to Tiger since that mtg called at AT&T National.

It's safe to say, that no one is indispensable. Whether on a professional level in golf or in a board room, there's always someone ready and waiting to take your job!

I hope that Steve Williams has a successful time, while looping for Adam Scott. Wherever Steve lands permanently, that player will be lucky to have him!

Happy Birthday @Ouchieee

I would be remiss to not mention a special friend whom I met through Twitter and then finally met at the LPGA StateFarm Classic about 14 months ago. MaryAnn is a GOLF NUT! She is on a travel league every other friday and then 2 others (on tuesday and thursday). She takes on the duties of scheduler for the Makray ladies golf leagues in the northern suburbs of Chicago. She has the kindest of hearts and would do anything for a friend. Not only can she play golf, but she is the season #1 on our Fantasy Golf Team as well. Here are a couple pics of her with two of her favorite LPGA players, Karen Stupples and Christina Kim from the Kraft Nabisco earlier this year in sunny California!

So, I wish her the grandest of days today, on her Birthday! May you enjoy your day MaryAnn and many good blessings flow to you my Friend!

Happy Birthday!!!

Love,

Richoh Women's British Open

Well, it's now right around 10 pm at Carnoustie and the 2nd round of the Ricoh Women's British Open is in the books. Caroline Masson sits in first place with rounds of 68 & 65. She currently leads the tournament at -11. Caroline carded a bogey free round today and dropped in 7 birdies!

In second place are Meena Lee & Inbee Park at 10 under, followed by Se Ri Pak, Na Yeon Choi and Dewi Claire Schreefel at -8. Inbee had a record tying career low 64 on friday, as did Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak, marking the low round of the championship thus far!

World's #1 Yani Tseng had a much better round today carding a 66 to go to -7. Her first round 71 had everyone wondering if she's put too much pressure on herself to continue that level of play. I don't think so. Everyone is going to have some tourneys that are just off. The best players in the sport can have a day that is trying to get even one birdie. That's golf. Yani has been pretty darn consistent in her level of play. It's no difference that someone like Tiger Woods who gets so many wins but then doesn't finish in the top 10. Today, Yani grabbed an eagle, 6 birdies and 2 bogeys. Her driving distance today was up her 1st round by 16 yards. She had fewer putts, and hit more fairways. Yani has the one thing that many don't when she's on the course; she can stay very relaxed and focused on what she needs to do. Can she grab another win at Carnoustie, I say yes. If anyone can, Yani can. She has a maturity when she steps on the course that surpasses some of those nearly double her age. I believe  saturday and sunday are going to be very interesting to watch her climb even further up the leader board and stand a great chance at defending her title!

There were lots of rounds in the 60's today compared to yesterday. The ones that moved up today, moved tremendously. Take Jiyai Shin for example, she started today in a T90 and finished in a T23. A favorite of mine Karen Stupples did the same, starting in a T75 and finishing in a T38. Karen has become the "Queen of Eagles" via her friendly fans on Twitter, and rightfully so. Karen carded an eagle on #6 today (which she took par on yesterday). She also had 4 birdies and 1 double bogey to grab a 68. What you may not know, is that Karen is the 2004 Champion of the Richoh Women's British Open!

Linda Wessberg of Sweeden started today in a T62 and finished in a T12 after carding 8 (yes eight) birdies accompanied by 2 bogeys. I believe this gal is going to to be within the top 5 after Saturday's round and one to watch on Sunday! Also watch Sophie Giquel-Bettan, who jumped into a T12 after starting in a T30. I think this gal has some great play ahead of her this weekend! Also climbing were Suzann Pettersen, Michelle Wie, Janice Moodie and Jimin Kang to name a few.

Some ladies that took a bit of a fall down the leader board, were Angela Stanford who got off to a great start yesterday, but today had 2 double bogeys, 1 bogey and 5 birdies to snag a 72. Ueda Momoko started in a tie for 7th place and dropped to a T18 by days end.

Three time winner here, Kari Webb finished her 2nd round at 71, to place her into a 15 player tie for 23rd. While she won in '95, '97 and 2002, she's going to have to tame the course and get some birds if not eagles going tomorrow if she hopes to be in any kind of contention on Sunday. She is a phenomenal player and has it within her, but can she stick it out while being behind the leader by 8 strokes? Only time will tell.

Now, your History lesson of the day.......
How many of you knew that this is the first time the Ricoh Women's British Open is being played at the prestigious links course at Carnoustie Golf Links. While Carnoustie hosted "The Open Championship" on 7 different occasions, it is the first time for the ladies. It is said that the course is in it's best playing condition it's ever been in. Designed by Alan Robertson of St. Andrews, James Braid redesigned the Championship Course in 1926. Finally, the last 3 holes were

The Evian Masters July 21-24th

While Laura Davies, Helen Alfredsson and Annika Sorenstam are among two-time winners of the Evian Masters, this year Jiyai Shin will hope to make that list as the defending Champion. Both Laura and Annika each won their 2 titles with a year in between however, Helen Afredsson made history while winning her 2nd title 10 years after her first one in 1998!

Just how the field of 111 is determined:
The players that are eligible to play consist of the following: The Top Ten finishers from the 2010 Evian Masters, the #1 on the Money List for the KLPGA, JLPGA, LPGA, ALPGA and LET for the year prior to the tourney, winners of the 2011 Kraft Nabisco, 2011 LPGA Championship by Wegman's and the 2011 US Women's Open. Additionally, the 2010 Ricoh Women's British Open, All active LPGA Hall of Fame members, All past Evian Masters champs, winners of all Official LPGA tourneys from the 2010 Evian Masters through to this week, Winners of all Official LET tourneys of the same time frame and 10 Wild Cards. If this doesn't fill the field with the above determining factors, it will be filled by Players from the Rolex Women's World Rankings.

The current Players list is available via this link;  111 Players for 2011 Evian Masters .

While Jiyai Shin started several strokes behind Morgan Pressel in last years final round at the Evian Masters, she held tightly to the goal of "making no mistakes". She also played this just 6 weeks following her emergency appendectomy that made her withdraw from the LPGA StateFarm Classic in Springfield, IL. With 4 players waiting in the club house, Jiyai had the confidence and skill to sink her birdie putt on #18 to prevent a playoff. She recalls seeing the leaderboard on hole 17 and knew what she needed to do and did it!

Will we see the Champagne on Jiyai again this year? One thing is for sure, she's going to give it her all as she so routinely does. While it will be her goal, she will simply play as well as she can and worry about sinking putts when she has the chance.

Televised scheduling of this year's Evian Masters is via the Golf Channel; Thursday and Friday from 6:30-8:30 pm ET and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00-4:00 pm ET.

Crisite Kerr will be hot on her heels this week, to further her chase for regaining the World's #1 Player spot. Cristie sits 2nd on the Rolex Rankings, right behind worlds #1 Yani Tseng. Jiyai is in 4th place behind Suzann Pettersen who holds 3rd.

While she has a nearly double lead in the US Solheim Points list, she is followed by; Morgan Pressel, Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer, Stacy Lewis, Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Julie Inkster and Christina Kim.

After this tourney, the ladies will be off to Carnoustie, Angus, Scotland for the Ricoh Women's British Open July 28th-31st.

Scoring via the LPGA website can be found here; Real Time Scoring . You can watch live via computer at Evian Masters TV .

The Evian Masters also has an iPhone & iPad App, which you can use to follow along live!

And, follow via Twitter; @EvianMasters .

With so many new Rookie's on tour, this year's Evian Masters could produce a new 1st Time Winner. Don't count out our veterans, Cristie Kerr and Karen Stupples. Cristie is always focused and intent on one thing....WINNING! England's Karen Stupples has been warming up her newest Wilson irons and finished in a tie for 15th at The Women's Open last week in Colorado Springs, where So Yeon Ryu won a playoff against Hee Kyung Seo. Cristie finished in 3rd place, with Angela Stanford taking 4th and Mika Miyazato rounding out the 5th position.

2011 Open Championship; who will finish strong Sunday?

The coveted Claret

Sandwhich, Kent, England is the home of this week's 2011 Open Championship and has hosted 13 Open Championships in it's history. The last being in 2003, when Ben Curtis took home the Claret after playing in his first Major as a rookie.

While saturday's weather was a bit harsh, it didn't keep Tom Watson or Trevor Immelman from being the biggest movers on Saturday. They are both tied in 25th place going into the final round tomorrow after moving up 20 positions. Some surprising players missing the cut were Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell and Matt Kuchar.

On the other hand, Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler were moving up today. Each capturing 2 birdies in difficult conditions; Dustin sits in 2nd place at -4 and Rickie in a tie with Thomas Bjorn for 3rd.

Northern Irelander Darren Clarke currently sits in 1st place at -5, one stroke ahead of DJ. Darren has fired all 3 rounds in the 60's, with a 68,68, & 69 respectively. He has stated to win this tourney, would be the ultimate dream. Today, he fired off 3 birdies but had 2 bogeys to hold him back from a projected round of 65. His 2nd round carded a double bogey but also had an eagle on the #7 par 5. From his first round to today's, he has been consistent with his birdies also trying to keep a lid on the bogeys, with only 2 today. Will he be able to control the nerves and keep his consistency Sunday? He will be paired with Dustin Johnson, who shot a 68 today.

Dustin Johnson has held on firing a 68 for his last 2 rounds. Today, he captured 6 birdies and had 4 bogeys. His 2nd round consisted of only 1 bogey and 3 birdies. Can he be consistent and have another round like his 2nd? I will say that if he can limit his round to only 1 bogey and have at least 4-5 birdies, he will take 1st or 2nd place.

Another young gun to watch on Sunday, is Rickie Fowler. While a natural on motocross (if you've seen his PUMA motocross golf commercial), Saturday's conditions proved to be just as challenging, with wind and rain that flipped umbrellas inside out. Rickie has carded rounds of 70, 70 and 68. To fire a 68 in today's condition boasts well for his play this week. This young American shows that he has the endurance and the talent to play with the best. While he may have struggled a bit this year being consistent with his low rounds from tourney to tourney, I expect to see Rickie card a top 5 finish on Sunday! Saturday scoring shows he held his bogeys to 2, while also having 4 birdies. Oh, and check out those gloves keeping his hands warm and dry!

Lucas Glover is going to have to have several birdies on Sunday, if he is to have a Top Ten finish. He was not able to grab any birdies today and carded 3 bogeys. Suffice it to say, that is not going to be enough on Sunday, when the weather is looking for more showers and wind. The only difference expected, is that it is suppose to be a couple of degrees warmer with a high of 70.

I will go on the record stating that if Dustin can have another day like today, he will have a shot at the Claret Jug. I predict Davis Love III will move up the ladder and have a top 5 finish, if not taking 2nd place. And for Darren Clarke, if he can hold on; I think a 3rd or 4th place finish is in store for him. I wish all the guys the best on Sunday as I predict a continuously changing scoreboard right down to the last hole.

I will leave you with a picture of Rickie's motocross inspired golf cart. Now that's combing his love of two sports!

It's here, the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run!

The John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run is here! This DA Weibring course design certainly has the memorable holes with dramatic views, just as they strived for! I have had the opportunity to play this course several times, with it being "in my own backyard" per se. The course is a Par 71 and plays 7,157 yards. The purse this week is $4.5 million. Steve Stricker is the defending "back to back" Champion of this great tourney. Can he make history and make it a 3rd? He loves the course and can drive down from his home in Wisconsin with his family for a great week of golf; which suits him well as the past 2 years have shown.

You can find the Field List via this link; JDClassic Field List . You can also download the John Deere Classic App, which is fantastic and will take you to each and every hole! This is available to both iPhone users and Android-based users. Of course for those Twitter fans, follow @JDClassic . The headquarters of John Deere is located in the adjoining city of Moline, IL. Also known to many as the "Quad Cities".

One great thing that the John Deere Classic has done, is the Birdies for Charity Program. You can make a pledge for each birdie made during the tournament. The winning guess will win a green 2011 Chevy Camaro. Of course there is a tie-breaker should more than one person guess correctly. Last year $4.34 million was raised for participating non-profit organizations. Last year, 2,010 birdies were made at the 2010 JDClassic. That in itself is unbelievable given the 2010/2,010! 163 people made the correct choice, who then participated in a drawing for the win.

A bit of History: There are several adjoining cities that make this area a place to be enjoyed by all. The mighty Mississippi River separates IL from Iowa here in the Quad Cities. So, a couple minute drive across the Interstate 74 bridge and you're in Davenport, IA home of the Bix 7 race that has runners from across the world. Also, known in the area is RAGBRAI which stands for Register's annual great bicycle ride across Iowa. Lance Armstrong has participated in at least one leg of this historical bicycle ride for the past several years. This year, Davenport Iowa will be the final arrival for the riders, where they will dip their tires in the Mississippi River to signify completion of the challenge.

Whether or not Steve Stricker makes history, is unknown. But what is known, is that great golf will be enjoyed by thousands! Televised coverage will be via the Golf Channel from 2:00-5:00 PM CST for the first 2 rounds, followed by CBS coverage for rounds 3 & 4 from 2:00-5:00 PM CST. You can follow Live Scoring  if you're away from a t.v. or just want to watch the whole field while away from a scoreboard this week.

Hydrate yourselves if heading out into the July heat, with plenty of water. Keep in mind that Alcohol dehydrates you and could make heat induced illnesses hit you harder and faster. There is alot of shade on the course with the trees, so grab yourself a spot to regroup when needed. Sunblock and fluids (preferably water), will be the key to having a safe and enjoyable time this week if on the grounds!

Now, Go Hit Some Balls............

The U.S. Women's Open begins tomorrow!

First of all, here's a little note about this event; The US Women's Open is not LPGA co-sponsored. It is conducted by the USGA. This week's Open is a Major Championship and is one of the longest running events on the LPGA Tour. It is the 7th Championship the USGA has staged here. The course design is by Donald Ross & Robert Trent Jones, Sr. It plays 7,047 yards and is a par 71. Sitting only 15 minutes from the Colorado Springs Airport, it is easily accessible. And, just 90 minutes north, is the Denver International Airport.

The ladies will be playing The Broadmoor East Course for this week's Open, which is the 66th U.S. Women's Open. The Broadmoor Resort has been awarded the 5-Star Award for the 50th consequtive year! From my tweets with some of the golfers and Ann Cain, also known as @TFJgolfgirl . The rooms are said to be spectacular and the beds heavenly. The pictures are amazing, if you take the time to look on the The Broadmoor site!

As most will recall, Paula Creamer defeated Na Yeon Choi and Suzann Pettersen by four strokes last year, with a -3, 281. While only her final round was in the 60's (69), she started with a +1 on her first day and had respective rounds of 70 for days #2 & #3. Will she be able to defend her title this week in Colorado Springs?

If so, she's going to have to stop Yani Tseng who has been on a hot streak as of late! Also a sure contender is Cristie Kerr. Yani already has 8 wins with 4 of those being Majors on the LPGA Tour. I firmly believe she will break Annika's record of 10 Majors in the upcoming 1 or 2 seasons. While only 22 years old, she has alot of golf ahead of her! She is focused and stays as calm as anyone I've ever seen on the golf course. She is always a joy to talk to and believes in being accessible to her fans as well. Yes, you heard it here first; Yani will win this week's Open.

As always, you can follow Live Scoring via this link, LIVE SCORING . You can also follow the US Women's Open via Twitter at @2011womensopen .Televised coverage will be from 5:00-9:00 PM ET for rounds 1 & 2 on ESPN2. The 3rd & 4th round coverage will be from 3:00-6:00 PM ET on NBC.

In The Memory of Caylee

What this day should be about, was finding Justice for Caylee! My heart aches for that poor little girl whose life was cut short by a mother who chose partying over her daughter. A little girl who would just now be getting ready for kindergarten. A little girl who had a smile that lit up a room. A little girl who was so dearly loved by her grandparents, uncle and family. A little girl who was innocent and trusted her mother unfortunately. A little girl who did NOT deserve to be taken from this world at all, and especially in the horrendous and disposing way that occurred.

While I watched with anticipation once I heard the jury reached a Verdict; I was on the edge of my seat. I was praying that justice would prevail. I was hoping for a guilty verdict. While alot of analysts also felt that the prosecution proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Casey was not only a liar, but a murderer; I had belief in our Justice System.

As a person of these United States, we must rely on our judicial system. I am having a hard time doing so today, the day Casey was found not guilty. When the court madam read the first verdict of not guilty, I said to myself "ok, she will be found guilty of the next". I felt anger sitting in front of the tv. Then, the 2nd count was not guilty and I was in disbelief. The 3rd and last count was read and I felt sick to my stomach. Casey cried and sobbed NOW, after she didn't do so when her precious little girl was missing and then confirmed dead. Where were the tears then Casey? America cried them for Caylee!

Casey's parents George and Cindy, abruptly arose from their seats and left the courtroom without any expression. No celebration for Casey, the daughter that made allegations against her own father who would have traded places in jail for her if he could. Her own mother lied and committed perjury on the stand to try and prove she made some of the searches on the computer even though it was shown she could not have. Then, there's Krystal H. or "River Cruz", who also proved she committed perjury. This woman only decided to "change her story" after her sister met with the media. She found out what a good juicy story would pay and the next day, called the national enquirer and sold a story about an alleged affair with George, for $4,000.

What truly amazes me, is the fact that this jury found Casey not guilty. When forensic experts testify and DNA samples prove that little Caylee's body was decomposing in Casey's trunk, how can you find her not guilty of 1 of 3 counts. How? It was proven that Casey researched chloroform and neck breaking and spleen injury, etc. We're talking about proven facts. The jury wasn't from the area. They were chosen when the Defense claimed Casey couldn't get a fair trial. Ha, fair trial, seriously? This was all but fair for Caylee!

While this is my opinion only, I wish not to argue the facts with anyone. I will simply pray for the day that Casey has to face judgement in a higher court. That is, if Casey has much of a life after being released. I personally think she was safer in jail. She doesn't have the mentality to figure out that most know she's guilty, even if this jury failed. She committed a despicable, horrendous act of murder. Maybe someone in jail will get to her before Thursday's sentencing, maybe not. She is likely "protected" from the main population unfortunately. So, if she walks after being granted time served thursday, which is a good probability; she will have no more protection. It's in GOD's hands now, or should I say Satans because that's where Casey will end up whether it's next week, next year or 1 decade or several decades from now. Justice will someday be served.

GOD BLESS YOU CAYLEE, RIP little girl, you are NOT forgotten!
